Strawberry Production in Gujarat’s Dang Rises 65% in 3 Years
Strawberry production in Gujarat’s Dang district has surged by 65% over the past three years, marking a major shift from traditional crops like nagli to high-value horticulture farming. Farmers are increasingly adopting the Sweet Charlie variety, supported by better market access, improved cultivation methods, and government-backed horticulture India initiatives.
This rapid growth is also linked to rising strawberry prices, which have made the crop more attractive compared to conventional agriculture. Improved demand from urban markets and food processing industries has strengthened local strawberry supply, encouraging more farmers to expand cultivation areas.
Experts highlight that better farming practices such as drip irrigation, mulching, and controlled farming techniques have significantly improved yield quality. These advancements are contributing to strong agriculture growth and higher income levels among small and marginal farmers in the region.
The expansion of cold chain facilities and improved logistics has also enhanced the flow of produce, supporting emerging opportunities in strawberry exports to nearby states and commercial markets. As a result, farmers are receiving better returns and greater price stability.
Officials say the shift toward fruit-based farming reflects a broader transformation in Gujarat’s agricultural landscape. The growth of fruit farming and high-value crops is reducing dependency on traditional grains and encouraging rural entrepreneurship.
With increasing adoption of modern techniques, Dang district is emerging as a growing hub for Agri Innovation and commercial horticulture. If this momentum continues, the region could play a key role in strengthening India’s overall strawberry production and supply chain efficiency.
