India Launches ₹167 Crore Kiwi Mission to Boost Fruit Exports
The Indian government has launched a major ₹167 crore Arunachal Kiwi Mission aimed at strengthening the country’s fruit exports and transforming Arunachal Pradesh into a leading kiwi production hub. The initiative focuses on improving production capacity, building strong post-harvest systems, and expanding market access for farmers in the Northeast.
Under the programme, farmers will receive high-quality planting material, modern cultivation techniques, and technical support to improve yield and fruit quality. The mission also emphasizes development of critical infrastructure such as cold storage facilities, pack houses, and food processing units, which are essential for reducing post-harvest losses and maintaining export-grade standards.
Officials stated that the initiative is designed to enhance India’s position in the global horticulture exports market while significantly increasing farmer incomes. By strengthening agri-export infrastructure, the government aims to reduce supply chain inefficiencies and improve direct access to domestic and international buyers.
The mission also focuses on expanding value-added fruit production, enabling farmers to benefit from processing and branding opportunities. Experts believe that kiwi cultivation has strong commercial potential due to rising demand in both domestic and international markets.
Additionally, the initiative is expected to promote agricultural diversification in Northeast India, creating new livelihood opportunities and reducing dependence on traditional crops. Improved logistics and better cold chain connectivity will further support the growth of premium fruit segments.
If implemented effectively, the Arunachal Kiwi Mission could play a key role in boosting India’s overall fruit exports, strengthening rural economies, and positioning the Northeast as a major contributor to the country’s horticulture growth story.
