Kashmir Handicrafts Get Global Export Boost Under “Local to Global” Push
After Strawberries, the government of Jammu & Kashmir has shift its focus to Kashmir handicrafts. The government in collaboration with the Ministry of Textiles, has rolled out a strong export-focused initiative to promote Kashmir Handicrafts in global markets. The programme is part of India’s broader “Local to Global” strategy. It aims at transforming traditional artisan products into internationally competitive brands.
Under this initiative, iconic crafts such as Pashmina shawls, hand-knotted carpets, papier-mâché art, and walnut wood carvings will be positioned for wider global reach. The focus is on improving branding, boosting supply chains, and enhancing product quality to meet international standards.
According to officials, the initiative will not only expand export opportunities but also directly benefit thousands of local artisans and weavers across the Kashmir Valley. By integrating modern design support, digital marketing, and global trade linkages, the government aims to create sustainable income streams for craft-based communities.
As per experts, boosting handloom exports from India and strengthening traditional handicrafts global branding can significantly increase foreign exchange earnings while preserving cultural heritage. The push also includes participation in international trade fairs, e-commerce integration, and certification support to improve market trust.
Kashmir’s artisanal sector has long been admired for its intricate craftsmanship, but limited global visibility and middlemen dependency have restricted its full potential. This new policy direction aims to bridge that gap and make Pashmina exports, artisan craft promotion, and heritage textile branding key drivers of rural economic growth.
With rising global demand for sustainable and handmade luxury products, the “Local to Global” initiative is expected to position Kashmir as a major hub in the international handicrafts market.
