India’s AI Mission Must Prioritise Agriculture, Says Maharashtra CM
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has emphasized that agriculture must remain at the heart of India’s AI mission, highlighting the growing role of artificial intelligence in transforming the country’s farming sector. Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the Chief Minister said AI can play a major role in improving food security, strengthening climate resilience, and increasing farmer incomes.
Fadnavis pointed to Maharashtra’s ongoing AI-driven agriculture initiatives as examples of how technology can support rural development. Among them is the MahaAgri AI Policy, which focuses on integrating smart technologies into farming practices. He also highlighted the MahaVISTAAR platform, designed to provide farmers with personalized guidance related to weather updates, irrigation planning, market trends, and government schemes.
According to officials, the use of artificial intelligence in farming could help farmers make faster and more informed decisions, reducing risks linked to unpredictable weather and market volatility. Experts believe such digital tools can improve productivity while supporting more sustainable agricultural practices.
The Chief Minister also stressed that India’s future AI ecosystem should not remain limited to urban industries and technology sectors. Instead, smart farming technologies and rural innovation should become key pillars of long-term economic development.
Industry observers say Maharashtra’s focus on digital agriculture reflects a broader national shift toward technology-led farming solutions. As climate challenges and food demand continue to rise, policymakers increasingly see AI as a critical tool for improving efficiency and strengthening agricultural resilience.
The remarks have renewed discussions around how India’s AI mission can accelerate rural transformation while ensuring inclusive growth for farmers and the agriculture sector.
