US-Iran War: Are Oil, Aviation and Rupee Under Pressure?

Notably, the US-Iran war is emerging as a major risk for global markets, with potential consequences for crude oil supplies, aviation, currencies, inflation and everyday consumer costs. As tensions escalate further, the United States is threatening tougher sanctions against Iran as Washington seeks to intensify economic pressure on Tehran. But, China has pushed back against additional sanctions, creating uncertainty over how effectively the pressure campaign can be enforced.

Significantly, one of the biggest concerns for global energy markets is the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but strategically important waterway through which a significant volume of the world’s oil and energy supplies moves. Any prolonged disruption in shipping could send crude oil prices higher, increasing costs for transportation, airlines, manufacturing and logistics.

It is quite noteworthy that Brent crude has recently traded around $93.42 a barrel, while WTI crude has been around $86.36. A sustained rise in these benchmarks could have a major impact on oil-importing economies such as India.

What’s the Impact on India and the Indian Rupee?

India imports a large share of its crude oil requirements, making the country particularly vulnerable to international energy price shocks. Higher crude prices can increase the import bill and contribute to domestic inflation. Meanwhile, a stronger US dollar can add further pressure on the Indian rupee.

If the rupee weakens against the dollar, imported crude becomes more expensive in domestic currency terms, potentially increasing fuel, transportation and production costs. This could eventually affect the prices of goods and services across the Indian economy.

Aviation Faces Another Challenge. Here’s How?

The impact of the conflict is also extending to the aviation sector. International passenger traffic in and out of India reduced during the April-June quarter, putting additional pressure on Indian airlines.

Air India Group’s international carriage reportedly declined by 35%, while IndiGo recorded a 15.4% decline. Higher fuel costs, disrupted travel routes and weaker international demand could create additional challenges for airlines if geopolitical tensions persist.

Iranian Oil and Global Market Risks

Uncertainty surrounding Iranian oil supplies adds another layer of risk. If sanctions restrict Iranian exports or shipping through the Strait of Hormuz faces a prolonged disruption, Brent crude and WTI crude could experience further volatility. Therefore, the conflict extends far beyond geopolitics. Rising energy costs, weaker aviation demand, currency pressure and inflation could affect businesses and household budgets across India. Investors and policymakers will closely monitor whether economic pressure forces Iran to negotiate or instead triggers a broader global economic shock.
