Sunflower Seed Procurement Boosts Farmers’ Income in Karnataka
The Centre has approved Sunflower seed procurement of 9,023 tonnes in Karnataka for the 2026 Rabi season under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) framework. This move intends to protect farmers from price volatility and unstable earnings during the harvest period.
Notably, the procurement will be carried out under the Price Support Scheme (PSS), which guarantees that farmers receive fair and remunerative prices for their produce. Interestingly, this move is expected to directly benefit farmers income by strengthening financial stability in the rural economy. In addition to Karnataka, the government has also expanded support measures in several states under government procurement initiatives. The procurement limit for gram in Maharashtra has been increased, and the date of purchase window has been extended by 30 days. These steps are designed to ensure wider participation in MSP operations and improve income stability for the farming community under Indian agriculture systems.
Experts suggest that strong procurement policies are essential for promoting sunflower seed cultivation and encouraging farmers to adopt diversified cropping patterns. Karnataka, being a key hub for oilseed farming, plays a crucial role in boosting India’s edible oil supply chain. This also supports long-term growth in agriculture in Karnataka, where oilseeds form a significant part of the cropping pattern. The focus on Minimum support price mechanisms outlines the government’s commitment to safeguarding farmers from market fluctuations and ensuring sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.
