Pak Sugar Mills To Export Surplus Sugar, Will It Impact Indian Sugar Industry?
Pakistan’s sugar mills have appealed to the government for approval to export 600,000 tonnes of surplus sugar by citing sufficient domestic inventories and stable sugar prices. Since the Pakistan sugar industry, enabling exports will help reduce excess stocks, enhance mill liquidity, and earn valuable foreign exchange without influencing local sugar availability.
Industry representatives stated that the country has produced enough sugar to comfortably meet domestic demand, along with maintaining a healthy surplus. They argue that exporting excess supplies would benefit both mill owners and sugarcane growers by ensuring timely payments and improving cash flow in the supply chain. The proposal also comes as global sugar prices remain attractive, creating an opportunity for Pakistan to boost its position in international markets. The appeal highlights the significance of effective inventory management in the sugar production sector. Moreover, Industry officials maintain that controlled exports would prevent stock accumulation while supporting the overall financial health of the sugar industry. Also, they emphasise that domestic consumers are unlikely to face shortages, as adequate reserves are available to meet local demand.
Impact of Pak Sugar mills on Indian sugar exports
The development is being closely watched by regional exporters, including the Indian Sugar industry, as additional exports from Pakistan could increase competition in global markets. Any rise in Pakistani shipments may affect Indian sugar exports, particularly in price-sensitive destinations such as Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The government is expected to review the proposal after assessing domestic supply, price stability, and export opportunities. If approved, the move could provide a boost to Pakistan’s sugar sector, along with reshaping regional trade dynamics.
