Onion Procurement Centre Raises Support Price for Farmers

The Centre has raised the onion procurement price by 13% to ₹2,125 per quintal. It marks the fifth revision in the current season. This decision is aimed at enhancing returns for onion farmers along with ensuring smoother management of onion supply in the markets. The move signals ongoing government efforts to balance farmer welfare with consumer price stability amid changing agricultural conditions.

Ultimately, the revised procurement rate is expected to offer relief to cultivators facing volatility in onion prices, particularly during peak supply cycles. By intervening through procurement operations, the government looks for preventing distress sales and maintain a stable income flow for farmers. According to officials, such adjustments also help in boosting buffer stocks, which are significant for managing sudden spikes in onion demand.

Even Market experts suggest that higher procurement prices may encourage better production planning and support sustained onion production in major onion growing regions. Meanwhile, the policy aims to ensure that retail prices remain within a manageable range for consumers, despite seasonal variations.

Repeated revisions in procurement rates underscores the government’s active role in agricultural market regulation. The latest increase in onion procurement signals continued focus on farmer protection along with addressing supply-side pressures in the vegetable market. According to analysts, consistent procurement support will helping in balancing both farm-level earnings and overall market dynamics. As India navigates changing weather patterns and demand fluctuations, effective procurement policies are expected to play a vital role in balancing onion farmers’ interests with national food supply requirements.
