Telangana Urges Drought-Resistant Crops as El Nino Raises Rabi Concerns
As per latest information, Telangana agriculture officials have been asked to encourage drought resistant crops and short-duration varieties. The state prepares for the upcoming Rabi season amid prevailing El Nino conditions. Notably, this move aims to reduce water requirements and help farmers manage growing climate-related risks.
During a video conference on Rabi preparedness, Telangana Agriculture Secretary K Surendra Mohan instructed the officials to promote alternative crops cultivation, such as pulses, oilseeds and vegetables. It can offer better returns to farmers. Not only this, but officials were also instructed to create awareness about crop diversification based on available water resources and weather conditions.
Moreover, the Telangana agriculture department has also called for district-level reviews of El Nino conditions. Fertiliser companies were directed to ensure adequate supplies approaching Rabi season.
In addition, this focus on drought resistant crops comes after Telangana recorded a 17% rainfall deficit during the 2026 southwest monsoon. Uneven rainfall and water stress have increased concerns over agricultural planning for the upcoming Rabi season.
Besides this, agricultural scientists are also supporting crop diversification efforts. Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University has planned initiatives to promote crop varieties. These are appropriate for changing climatic conditions.
For farmers, the focus on drought resistant crops could help in reducing dependence on water-intensive cultivation and supporting income stability. The strategy highlights how Telangana is adapting its Rabi crops planning to uncertain weather and water availability.
