Spice Crops Hit by Drought in Karnataka’s Spice Belt. Here’s How?
Drought is putting severe pressure on Karnataka’s spice crops. In this case, chilli and turmeric emerging as the worst-hit commodities in the state’s major growing areas. The damage is raising concerns over spice production, farmer incomes and supplies for India’s wider spice trade.
A recent drought assessment covering several affected areas has highlighted substantial losses to chilli and turmeric cultivation. Byadagi chilli, one of Karnataka’s best-known varieties, has suffered significant damage, while turmeric growers are also facing sharp crop losses. Moreover, estimated losses stand at nearly ₹196.29 crore in chilli and ₹188.24 crore in turmeric.
Particularly, the crisis is significant for Karnataka’s Spice belt, where farmers depend heavily on crops such as chilli, turmeric, ginger and garlic. Insufficient rainfall and prolonged dry conditions have impacted the crop growth and productivity which has threatened the livelihoods of thousands of growers.
Not only this, the impact on Indian Chillies and Indian Turmeric could also influence domestic prices and availability if production falls substantially. Turmeric prices have boosted amid concerns about reduced supplies and lower carry-forward stocks. Notably, Karnataka’s crop losses could create fresh supply challenges in the upcoming months for the Indian spice industry. Farmers and traders are closely checking weather conditions as the state continues to face an acute rainfall deficit.
With drought conditions continuing in Karnataka, protecting spice crops has become increasingly important. The performance of the upcoming harvest will determine how severely the crisis affects spice production .
