How Could India’s MSMEs Drive the Next Export Boom?
What if India’s next major export boom comes not from large corporations, but from millions of small businesses? Indian MSME exports could become a major growth engine as the country expands its network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), opening new opportunities for small businesses in international markets.
What is an FTA, and how could it push Indian MSME exports?
An FTA is an agreement between countries that reduces or eliminates tariffs on goods and services traded between them. India has been actively increasing its trade partnerships, including agreements with the UAE, Australia, the UK and the EFTA bloc, while broader market-access opportunities are emerging through agreements with the European Union and New Zealand.
For Indian small and medium-sized businesses, this could be a significant opportunity. A manufacturer producing textiles, leather goods, engineering products, machinery or other Made in India products could become more competitive in overseas markets if tariffs are reduced. Lower trade barriers can help businesses access customers and markets that were difficult to enter.
MSMEs account for a significant share of India’s exports
The scale of the opportunity is substantial. MSMEs account for a significant share of India’s exports, manufacturing activity and economic output. Boosting their global presence could therefore play a significant role in India’s ambition to become a major manufacturing and export hub. However, Free Trade Agreements alone will not guarantee success. Businesses need to understand rules of origin, product standards, certifications, quality requirements, customs procedures and international trade regulations. They must also understand changing consumer preferences and the expectations of global buyers.
This creates both a challenge and an opportunity. India may be opening more doors to global markets, but Indian MSME exports will rely on whether small businesses are prepared to walk through them. Improving product quality, adopting international standards, expanding production capacity and building stronger global supply chains could help Indian businesses in moving from domestic suppliers to international players. If MSME sector can successfully leverage India’s trade agreements, the impact could extend beyond higher exports. It could boost manufacturing, create jobs, increase global supply chains and give Made in India products greater recognition worldwide.
