How Mithila Makhana Makes First Sea Export from Bihar to Australia?

Bihar’s GI-tagged Mithila Makhana has achieved a significant milestone with its first-ever sea shipment from the state to Australia. The 18-metric-tonne consignment was sourced directly from Makhana farmers in Darbhanga. Notably, it was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

The shipment marks a remarkable step in expanding international market access for Bihar’s traditional fox nut. APEDA identifies Mithila Makhana among India’s major GI-tagged products being exported to international markets by highlighting its growing role in the country’s agricultural export basket.

Higher Returns for Mithila Makhana Farmers

The export shipment could offer a boost to farmers and strengthen the Makhana industry by linking producers more directly with overseas markets. A report stated that farmers involved in the consignment received around 18% higher returns than prevailing market prices. The development underscores the potential of export-oriented supply chains to enhances farmer incomes along with creating stronger demand for Bihar’s traditional agricultural products.

Global Potential for Mithila Makhana

Significantly, demand for healthy snacks has increased international interest in makhana, often marketed as a Mithila Makhana superfood. Moreover, the product is already exported to countries such has the US, UAE, Nepal, Canada and Australia.
