Free Trade Agreements Push India to Send 500 Trade Delegations

India is stepping up efforts to boost its global trade presence through Free trade agreements by planning to send 500 business delegations to partner countries over the next eight to nine months. The initiative, led by the commerce ministry, intends to improve export opportunities, increase FTA utilisation, and help Indian businesses expand into international markets.

Officials said the outreach program will target countries with existing trade agreements, enabling exporters to better understand market access benefits, tariff advantages, and investment opportunities. The government also plans to engage with nearly 1,600 industry chambers and business associations across the country to improve awareness about international trade opportunities and export competitiveness.

In addition to trade delegations, specialised training sessions and workshops will be organised to help Indian companies navigate global regulations, supply chains, and cross-border trade requirements. The move is expected to particularly benefit MSMEs and sectors with strong export potential, such as textiles, agriculture, engineering goods, and pharmaceuticals.

Experts believe stronger implementation of bilateral trade agreements can help India diversify export destinations and reduce dependence on a few major markets. The strategy also aligns with India’s broader objective of increasing exports and attracting foreign investments amid uncertain global economic conditions.

Government officials added that improving FTA utilisation remains a key priority, as many businesses are still unable to fully benefit from existing trade agreements due to limited awareness and procedural challenges.

The initiative highlights India’s growing focus on export-led growth and deeper integration into global trade networks.
