Cotton Productivity Mission: ₹5,659 Cr Boost for Farmers

The government has approved the cotton productivity mission, a ₹5,659 crore initiative intended at changing the scenario of India’s Agriculture and boosting the cotton sector. The mission was set for implementation from 2026–27 to 2030–31. Additionally, it focuses on addressing stagnant yields, improving quality, and removing supply bottlenecks in the Agricultural sector.

A major highlight of this mission is the development of high-yielding variety seeds that are pest-resistant and climate-resilient. Notably, These innovations are expected to significantly improve productivity and ensure better returns for farmers engaged in cotton cultivation, directly supporting farmer income in the key producing states. The mission is aligned with the broader vision of Kapas Kranti, aiming to modernize cotton farming through scientific innovation and enhanced agronomic practices. Moreover, the mission targets a production level of 498 lakh bales by 2031 and aims to benefit around 32 lakh farmers across major cotton-growing regions. The scheme is expected to strengthen the overall cotton sector and enhance the global competitiveness in India agriculture.

In addition, the mission includes modernising processing units, improving testing infrastructure, and boosting exports. These measures will boost the textile industry, which heavily relies on raw cotton supply, while also supporting long-term growth in rural development. According to experts, the adoption of high-yielding variety seeds and modern farming systems will play an efficient role in enhancing the productivity and sustainability in the Agricultural sector. The mission is expected to create a more resilient cotton value chain, ensuring stable incomes and stronger rural economies.
