Soybean Oil Imports May Hit Record as Festive Demand Surges

India’s soybean oil imports are expected to hit a record 6.2 lakh tonnes in August, as refiners prepare for stronger edible-oil consumption during the festive season.

The projected imports would be significantly above the current monthly average, reflecting increasing demand from consumers and refiners. The rise is being driven by strong domestic demand, competitive international prices and disruptions to sunflower oil shipments from the Black Sea region. Notably, with sunflower supplies under pressure, Indian buyers are turning to soybean oil as an alternative. The narrowing price gap with palm oil is also making soybean oil more competitive.

In addition, the trend highlights India’s continued dependence on overseas supplies to meet its edible-oil requirements. Meanwhile, domestic soybean production remains a major factor for the market, with weather conditions and acreage affecting the availability of locally produced oilseeds. For consumers, higher imports could help maintain adequate supplies during the festive period and potentially limit sharp increases in soybean oil prices.
But, global vegetable-oil demand, supply disruptions and biodiesel consumption could continue to impact the international prices.

At the same time, India’s soybean oil exports remain relatively small compared with imports which reinforces the country’s position as a major edible-oil importer. The upcoming months will show whether the rise in soybean oil demand is mainly seasonal or part of a longer-term shift in India’s edible-oil consumption.
