How Does Turkey’s Cherry Production Boost Cherry Exports
According to sources, Turkey cherry exports are expected to increase this season, supported by higher production volumes following improved crop conditions. The data from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry show that the western Mediterranean region is the country’s main cherry production and export area in Turkey. Mehmet Ali Can, head of the Western Mediterranean Exporters’ Association (BAİB), said the harvest season started later than usual due to climatic conditions. While harvesting typically runs from late May until the end of July, this year’s cherry export season in Turkey is expected to continue through the end of August. Notably, Turkey produces approximately 700,000 tons of cherries annually, making it the world’s largest cherry producer. Generally, Turkey cherry exports range between 60,000 and 70,000 tons. Moreover, Can stated that crop volumes are higher this year following losses due to severe agricultural frost in the previous season. He added that increased production is expected to support cherry export growth from Turkey during the current campaign. Apparently, Turkey exported cherries worth US$210 million in 2024, with the western Mediterranean region accounting for US$91 million of that total. Last year, cherry exports increased by US$48 million, of which US$22 million came from the same region. Significantly, Europe and Russia remain the main export destinations for Turkish cherries. In addition, Turkey also ships cherries to Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, and several markets in the Far East and Middle East. Furthermore, industry efforts are underway to expand cherry exports to China, as exporters explore additional market opportunities.
