Taiwan Eyes US Market Opening for Pineapple Exports
Taiwan is preparing to increase its pineapple exports to the United States along with the first shipments expected in 2027. It is subject to final US approval. The move could create new opportunities for Taiwanese growers and exporters. The country plans to diversify its overseas markets.
The reports stated that Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture has completed the necessary administrative procedures and is waiting for formal notification from US authorities. The US Department of Agriculture published a pest risk analysis for public review in March 2026, with the consultation period ending on 4 May.
Golden Pineapple Varieties Escalate Pineapple Exports Plans
The golden pineapple, also known as the golden diamond variety. It accounts for around 90% of Taiwan’s pineapple production. According to authorities, this variety could qualify for export without special quarantine treatment under the proposed requirements.
Not only this, but Taiwan is also preparing to promote mango pineapples, a newer variety grown in the approximately 50 hectares. These pineapples are more suitable for storage and long-distance transportation. It makes them attractive for premium markets.
The government has helped prepare 50 hectares of pineapple cultivation for the US market. Moreover, Taiwan’s peak pineapple season runs from February to May.
Growing Pineapple Demand Supports Market Diversification
According to the ministry, Taiwan is increasing its exports of pineapple beyond established destinations. In addition, the country shipped nearly 15,700 tonnes to Japan in 2026, while shipments to Canada, South Korea and Australia recorded significant growth. Particularly, this US opening could boost international pineapple demand and provide exporters with another destination. But, future trade volumes will depend on final approval, buyer interest, pricing and logistics.
For US buyers, the development could introduce another source of fresh fruit and influence future pineapple imports. For Taiwanese producers, successful market access could support export diversification and long-term growth.
