Nepal Floods Cause Rs. 3.26 Billion Damage to Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries

According to the Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA), the recent Nepal floods have caused an estimated Rs. 3.26 billion in damage to agriculture, livestock and fisheries, whereas recovery needs for the three sectors have been assessed at Rs. 4.23 billion.

Which sector hit the most in Nepal floods?

The agricultural sector suffered Rs. 1.09 billion in damage, with floods of Nepal impacting 1,806 hectares of cropland. Paddy accounted for 1,669 hectares, while vegetables covered 137 hectares. The flood-affected area had an estimated production of 7,687 tonnes. Nuwakot recorded 68 per cent of the affected crop area, followed by Rasuwa and Dhading. The assessment estimated Rs. 1.42 billion would be required for agricultural recovery, including support for restoring cultivable land, drainage systems and soil, as well as providing seeds, fertilisers and farming tools.

What about livestock sector, fisheries sector & Nepal floods?

The livestock sector recorded the highest monetary damage at Rs. 1.45 billion. Around 252,445 animals and birds were affected. While poultry represented most affected animals, buffaloes, goats, chyangras and cattle accounted for the bulk of financial losses. Livestock recovery needs have been estimated at Rs. 1.74 billion. The fisheries sector suffered Rs. 715.9 million in damage, particularly at the Trishuli Fisheries Research Centre in Nuwakot. Its ponds, raceways, hatcheries, buildings, equipment and fish stocks were affected. Recovery needs stand at Rs. 1.07 billion. The Nepal floods have highlighted the need for coordinated recovery across the agricultural crop, livestock, poultry and fisheries sectors. The assessment recommends joint planning for irrigation, debris clearance and shared infrastructure to prevent duplication of funding.
