Copra prices in Tamil Nadu could boost in October as seasonal demand improves, according to an analysis by the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). Moreover, the study expects copra prices to remain nearly ₹145–150 per kg in the key Anaimalai market, supported by higher demand during the upcoming festival season.
What did the data state about Copra prices?
The projected recovery comes after a sharp correction in the market. Copra price data from Tamil Nadu shows that prices had dropped substantially from last year’s record levels amid increased supplies. Not only this, but market prices were also reported at nearly ₹120 per kg, in the month of July as compared with a peak of ₹275 per kg in December 2025.
In addition, TNAU’s outlook suggests that copra demand could become a major driver in the upcoming weeks. Festival-related consumption supports demand for coconut-based products, potentially improving buying interest for good-quality copra. Therefore, the demand for copra will remain an important market indicator. If festival buying boosts as expected, traders could observe firmer prices through October.
90% of India’s copra production consumed domestically
However, supply conditions will also impact the market. Notably, Tamil Nadu’s copra sector has faced production and labour-related challenges, whereas nearly 90% of India’s copra production is consumed domestically which makes local demand particularly important for price movements. For farmers, processors and traders, the upcoming weeks will determine whether copra prices can sustain the projected ₹145–150 per kg range or face renewed pressure from market arrivals.
