Makhana Exports Grow as India Sends First Flavoured Shipment to Canada

India’s growing presence in the global healthy food market received a significant boost as the country shipped its first-ever consignment of flavoured makhana to Canada. This move marks a significant milestone for the Makhana exports sector and under the rising international demand for value-added Indian agricultural products. Moreover, the 7-tonne shipment was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) which aims to boost the global market for Indian fox nuts along with enhancing income opportunities for farmers and processors.

Undoubtedly, India is one of the largest producers of makhana as Bihar’s traditional Makhana belt contributing significantly to the supply chain. The region is known for its unique rice cultivation practices as the thousands of farmers involved in Makhana production and processing activities.

The popularity of makhana has risen worldwide due to its nutritional benefits, including high protein content, low fat and suitability as a healthy snack.
