Tea Exports Resume as Nepal restarts Indian Shipments

According to reports, Tea exports from Nepal to India have resumed after customs clearance issues at the border were resolved. It marks a significant revival in cross-border agricultural trade. The disruption had temporarily affected supply chains, impacting tea growers, exporters, and market availability in major tea-importing regions of India.

This resumption is expected to stabilise tea prices in the Indian market, particularly for premium segments such as orthodox tea, which is widely sourced from Nepal’s high-altitude tea-growing regions. Moreover, these regions are known for producing high-quality tea leaves with distinct flavour profiles that are in strong demand among Indian consumers and speciality tea buyers. For Nepal, the restart of tea exports offers a critical relief to farmers and exporters who depend heavily on consistent access to Indian markets. On the other hand, the Indian tea industry benefits from a steady inflow of quality tea, helping balance supply changes and meet growing consumer demand. In addition, this development boosts bilateral trade relations between the two countries, reinforcing agricultural cooperation and market interdependence. With smoother border processes expected going forward, both nations are likely to see enhanced efficiency in tea trade logistics and distribution.

Generally, the resumption of tea exports marks a positive step toward restoring balance in the regional tea economy, supporting livelihoods, and ensuring the continued availability of premium tea products in India.
