Strawberry Growers in Kashmir Hope for Demand Revival Amid Tourism Recovery

Strawberry growers in Kashmir are optimistic about recovery after the last year’s Pahalgam attack, sharply reducing tourist sector and weakened demand for fresh produce. Undoubtedly, the disastrous incident severely affected strawberry farming, as tourism plays a crucial role in driving seasonal fruit consumption.

Kashmir, the region known for its natural beauty and ideal climate, relies on strawberry production as a high-value horticulture crop. Shockingly, the sudden impact on tourist sector has led to a drop in strawberry sales, leaving the strawberry stock unsold and reduced income. The impact was dreadful for local strawberry farms, where financial pressure added due to the perishability of fruit.

Despite these challenges, the growers are now optimistic as tourism activity could gradually recover. Local markets are also facing improved demand, offering hope for better price realization this season. Moreover, Farmers believe that as travel conditions stabilize, both domestic and tourist-driven consumption will support stronger strawberry farming outcomes. Furthermore, according to experts, improving cold storage infrastructure, enhancing logistics, and expanding market linkages could boost strawberry production in Kashmir. These steps are expected to reduce wastage and stabilise strawberry sales in the long term.

While recovery is underway, strawberry growers are confident about improving tourism sector and market conditions will help in ensuring profitability in the strawberry business and economy in the future.
