Is a deep crisis looming over Maize production? What about Corn Snacks?

Is a deep crisis looming over Maize production? Recently, there is a high possibility of a major drop in Kharif Maize due to a weak monsoon. This prediction has been made by USDA that is United Stated department of Agriculture. Moreover, recent estimates suggest that total maize production could stand at 50 million tonnes in 2026-27 due to a decline in Maize sowing and yields. Notably, the Ministry of Agriculture’s third estimate indicates that maize production in 2025-26 was 55 million tonnes. Notably, it’s a figure that was 27 percent higher than the production in 2024-25.

What is the real concern behind the drop in India’s maize production?

It is not just the reduction in acreage that has raised the projected drop in maize production, deficient rainfall is the real concern. The USDA’s ‘Grain and Feed Update’ report states that maize sowing was delayed by two weeks due to a weak monsoon in June. Not only this, but the report notes that standing crops in major maize-producing states are facing severe moisture stress due to the lack of rainfall.

What about Maize crops in August and Sept?

The US Department of Agriculture foresees the possibility that low rainfall in August and September, resulting in reduced soil moisture, could impact Rabi and Zaid maize crops as well. There are several snacks made using maize as a key ingredient. Now, the key question is: will this major drop heavily impact the Indian snacks industry? From Popcorn to corn tortillas, these are some of the snacks which are an essential part of everyday’s meal as according to the USDA, this year, total corn consumption is projected to be 51 million tonnes, which is an increase from 48 million tonnes last year.
