U.S. 2010 cotton sowings at 4-yr high, crop up sharply

Cotton sowings in the U.S. hit a four-year high in 2010 and the cotton crop of the world's largest fiber exporter should be up sharply in the 2010/11 season.The U.S. Agriculture Department's annual planted acreage report pegged U.S. 2010 cotton sowings at 10.909 million acres, the highest since the country planted 15.274 million acres in 2006.
Cotton arrivals up 700,000 bales

Cotton arrivals in the country from October until May 25 stood at 28.5 million bales, 7,00,000 bales higher than last year, according to date from the Cotton Association of India. Higher arrivals indicate the country may be able to meet the crop estimate of 30.4 million bales for 2009-10, an official from the association said. He added exports had been estimated at 8.5 million bales, but would now be lower due to the government suspending export registrations.
Nafed to sell 38,000 bales of cotton

The United States on Tuesday headed off a move by Brazil to impose penalties on a wide range of U.S. goods by offering concessions on a export loan guarantee program and said it would try to negotiate an end to a long-standing trade spat over cotton. The last-minute proposal came as Brazil was set to impose tariffs and lift protections on $829 million in U.S. goods, which would have been its right after a 2009 World Trade Organization ruling against U.S. cotton subsidies.
Africa cotton fibre output seen rebounding in 2011

Cotton fibre output from Africa will rise nearly 18 percent during the 2010-2011 season, thanks in part to increased use of genetically modified seeds, as per the African Cotton Association .Cotton fibre production from the continent's 16 main producers will hit 1.178 million tonnes during the season, up from just over a million tonnes forecast for the current season, according to ACA's forecast.
