EU approves six GM maize varieties for import

The European Union's executive branch has approved six genetically modified (GM) maize varieties for import to the bloc in food and animal feed, a further sign of its desire to speed up EU decisions on GM.Under EU rules, the European Commission granted the import approvals unilaterally after EU farm ministers failed to reach a decision on the applications in June.

India’s maize production may go up by 14 per cent in 2010-11 crop year to over 19 million tonnes on prospects of good rains better usage of seeds and a higher acreage in traditional paddy-growing states. India had produced 16.68 million tonnes of maize in 2009-10 down from 19.73 million tonnes in 2008-09. The dip in production last year was mainly because of poor monsoon.

US farmers can't meet booming corn demands

Exporters, livestock feeders and ethanol makers are going through the U.S. corn stockpile faster than farmers can grow the crops. Despite record crops in two of the past three years and another record within reach this year, the Agriculture Department estimated the corn carryover will shrink to the lowest level since 2006/07.

U.S. farmers could harvest 13.2 billion bushels of corn, the Agriculture Department's annual report on plantings indicated on Wednesday, implying harvest could be 1 percent smaller than its forecast earlier this month, but still narrowly topping last year's record.Soybean harvest could be 3.3 billion bushels, up 1 percent from USDA's June 10 estimate.
USDA jolts markets with cut in corn acres, stocks

The U.S. government roiled the grain markets with a sharp cut in corn acres and much tighter June 1 stockpiles, sending corn prices sharply higher and providing a short-term floor for the beaten-down market. Despite predictions for a modest increase in acres planted to corn this year, the U.S. Agriculture Department's survey of 88,000 growers found farmers had planted 87.872 million acres of corn, down from its previous estimate of 88.798 million acres in March.

China's corn output this year is seen at a record 168 million tonnes, up 2.5 percent from 2009, despite a cold spring having delayed planting of the crop by about two weeks in major growing areas.Sunny and warmer weather since late May has offset the impact from a delay in planting and boosted growth of the crop in the northeast.

Heat index shows higher US corn yields, record crop

The U.S. corn belt is enjoying one of its best growing seasons in years, according to a Reuters analysis of government temperature data, that looks likely to boost yields and deliver a record crop. The number of growing degree days, a method of measuring temperatures between 50 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit considered to provide the best growing conditions, in top corn states Iowa and Illinois were running 18 to 35 percent above normal.
