EU bioethanol production rises 31% in 2009 -body

Bioethanol production in the European Union rose by 31 percent in 2009, while consumption grew by 23 percent.The EU production was estimated at 3.7 billion litres, up from 2.8 billion the previous year, while consumption climbed to 4.3 billion from 3.5 billion.
Brazil to open second gen. ethanol mill in 2012

Brazil will produce second generation ethanol biofuel from cellulosic plant material on a commercial scale from 2012 as progress made in cutting costs makes the process more viable. Brazil's industry-funded Cane Technology Center (CTC) said the new plant will adjoin an existing cane mill and use bagasse and straw left over from conventional sugar-derived ethanol production.
Canola oil would qualify for biodiesel mandate-EPA

Biodiesel made from canola oil would emit 50 percent less greenhouse gas than petroleum diesel fuel, which would make it eligible for the U.S. mandate to increase renewable fuel production.EPA data that compares greenhouse gas emissions between biodiesel and conventional diesel, released on Monday, shows canola oil would meet a key eligibility requirement for the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard program.

Ethanol producer margins in USA are starting to improve slightly following their recent tumble to one-year lows, while ethanol futures seem to have found their feet after the late-June plunge to below $1.50 a gallon for only the third time in that contract's history. But given the floundering attempts to overhaul U.S. energy legislation, it is clear that ethanol producers will continue to operate without any clear federal guidelines and support and are not out of the woods yet.

Plentiful soybean oil supplies, low costs and a favorable export tax regime have spurred a rapid increase in production capacity in the South American country, which began exporting biodiesel in significant quantities just three years ago.
Brazil sthanol contract shows modest day-one trade

The new hydrate ethanol futures contract on Brazil's BM and FBovespa , the world's third largest trading exchange operator, ended its first day of trade with modest activity on Monday. Seventy-nine contracts for 30 cubic meters (30,000 liters) of hydrate ethanol each were traded on Monday, with expiries in the months July, August, October and November.

Brazil's cane sector is eager for the government to follow through quickly with promised financing to enable ethanol-producing mills to build stocks and avoid a repeat of the biofuel's wild price swings last year. The government said it intended to lend 2.5 billion reais ($1.4 billion) to ethanol producers to provide them with working capital they will be deprived of by putting part of their product into storage to guarantee supplies after harvesting ends in December.
